RARE ADVERTISING PIECES (Shawano) (Appleton (east side))

First, there is an advertising desert plate that states: "Compliments of J.A. Lieg and Co., Shawano, WI" It has the image of a pair of apples ready to be picked off the tree. It is in good condition for it's age .. just having some shallow scratch marks from usage. BACKGROUND: John Anton Lieg was born in Brown County on March 11, 1867. He was the son of German immigrants, Anton and Gertrude Lieg. Sadly, by the year 1900 only five of their nine children were still living. John Anton was one of them. After the death of his father in 1895, "J.A." took over running the family's general merchandise (department) store at 106 Franklin Street in Shawano. By 1930 the department store had been sold and the Lieg's specialized in shoes, operating right next store at 102 Franklin Street. The title "J.A. Lieg and Co." suggests that this plate dates prior to 1930 then. By the way, John Anton would die in 1937 and the shoe store would be taken over by his son, John, Jr., who operated it until at least the 1950s. PRICE: $15
Second, a very large advertising plate that states: "compliments of M. Chaimson and Sons, Shawano, Wisc." Interestingly Max Chaimson would've been a competitor of the Lieg's. He was a Jewish man, born in Russia in 1860, who had emigrated to the US in the mid 1880s. For a period of time during the mid 1890's, they lived in Amherst, WI. When he first arrived in Shawano with his family, he'd worked as a day laborer. Then, in 1898, he established a general merchandise store in Shawano - also on Franklin Street (410 Franklin Street, to be exact). He and his wife, Annie, had been blessed with 8 children. At some point during the 1920's, Max retired and his son, William, took over the store. Most likely, this plate dates to that era. PRICE: $25
